Is America Still One Nation Under God?
Professor Andrew Moore and Ryan Raybuck, ‘23
“One nation, under God, indivisible….” This phrase from the Pledge of Allegiance to the American flag is familiar to school children and adults alike. Despite its familiarity, it raises serious questions about American history and the nature of contemporary American society.
Is the United States of America now – or has it ever been – a Christian nation, or even a broadly religious one? Why does the answer to that question matter?
Professor Andy Moore, the Robert E. Jean Professor of History and Government, will examine these questions, from both a historical and a contemporary perspective, with an eye toward understanding the ways that the nation’s supposed Christian heritage has been the source of political reform and division. Ryan Raybuck, ‘23, a Communication Studies major from Greenwich, Connecticut, and a member of the Hawks Football Team, will offer a formal response to Professor Moore’s lecture.
