Transcontinental Railroad and Westward Expansion

The Transcontinental Railroad was the first continuous railroad to connect the eastern states to the Pacific coast and was completed in 1869. The railroad lead to the rapid settlement of the west and the displacement of indigenous peoples. 

Possible sub-topics could include:

  • Chinese immigrant labor/Irish immigrant labor
  • Violation of Native American Great Plains treaties
  • Rapid settlement of western territories
