The language of vocation and calling is most often associated with paid employment. But this may be due more to the economic and cultural assumptions of the modern West, rather than careful philosophical and theological investigation. We are called into an entire way of life, and our paid labor is only one part of that. If, as one modern commentator suggests, vocation is “not just about making a living, but about making a life,” then we should also be considering how we use our time outside of work—including our leisure time.

This presentation is offered in conjunction with Phase One of Anselmian Journeys.
