Core Databases

CINAHL Plus with Full Text [EBSCO] This link opens in a new window
Core database for research in the nursing and allied health disciplines. Access full-text journal articles plus citations for books and conference proceedings.
Nursing & Allied Health Premium [PROQUEST] This link opens in a new window
Contains scholarly and trade journals related to the field of nursing. Also contains evidence-based resources, dissertations, and Medcom training videos.
PubMed This link opens in a new window
Free database of biomedical citations that includes the contents of Medline, plus additional material from life science and biochemistry journals. **Look for the WebBridge link to place an Interlibrary Loan request.

Finding Nurse Authors & Nursing Journals

While the following methods are not the be-all and end-all for limiting your results to just nurse authors or nursing journals, they can be a good starting point for filtering your results.

Nurse Authors

In CINAHL:
- Search for nurs* in the "AF Author Affiliation" field. This helps to catch authors who have an affiliation given, and that affiliation is a school of nursing or something related.
- Check "Any Author is Nurse" from the Advanced Search page. This gives different results from the method above.
In Nursing & Allied Health (ProQuest): Search for nurs* in the "Author - AU" field. Like in CINAHL, this helps to catch authors who have an affiliation given, and that affiliation is a school of nursing or something related.

Nursing Journals

Not all nursing journals have the work "nursing" in their name, but a large number of them do. The following methods will search for journal titles that have "nurse," "nurses," or "nursing" in them.

In CINAHL: Search for nurs* in the "SO Publication Name" field.
In Nursing & Allied Health (ProQuest): Search for nurs* in the "Publication title - PUB" field.

Millions of citations, derived from thousands of biomedical and life science journals, and indexed with Medical Subject Headings (MeSH®) from the NLM controlled vocabulary.
Extending back to 1946, annual input now exceeds 700,000 citations.

Full-text articles from several hundred scholarly medical journals, with an emphasis on nursing and allied health.

Starting point for public health information and research.
Includes current newspaper articles for uncovering timely results on the latest breaking topics pertaining to public health.

Journal Finder

Use the Journal Finder search box when you know exactly what you're trying to find. E.g. you have a citation from a bibliography and want to know if the library has access to the article. Use this box to search by the journal title.

Note: If the journal title is abbreviated in the citation, you'll need to find the full title to type into the search box.

Google Scholar

Use Google Scholar to search for articles that may not be in the library's databases. Google Scholar searches nearly all publisher websites.

Note: If you find yourself being prompted to purchase an article, instead request the article through Interlibrary Loan (see instructions from the "Get Full Text of Articles" page.

Get Full Text of Articles

In many cases, you will find the full-text of articles directly in the journal databases. Here are some tips for how to get the full-text in other situations:

In the databases, click to see if the full text is in another database or in Geisel Library's collection, or if you can request a copy via Interlibrary Loan

If WebBridge says the journal is in the library's collection, see our video tutorial for how to find it on the shelf

If you have an article's citation information in hand, search the journal's name in Journal Finder to see if the library has access to the year you need
