The Fine Arts major provides a path of study in one of three emphasis areas:
The degree requirements for each emphasis area are designed to expose students to the interdisciplinary nature of the visual arts and music, in addition to providing a more narrow focus in one discipline area. In addition to the degree requirements in each area, all Fine Arts majors participate in the Senior Seminar, and complete a Senior Thesis Project and Senior Comprehensive Examination. The Senior Thesis Project culminates in a public presentation of the student's achievement in his or her specific focus of the Fine Arts.
The Fine Arts curriculum offers a variety of opportunities that combine practical learning experiences with community engagement. Several courses incorporate service-learning, allowing students to apply their skills and talents in outreach to community organizations. Student internships are available on-campus, in The Alva deMars Megan Chapel Art Center gallery and the Dana Center for the Humanities, as well as at off-campus sites such as local museums, galleries, advertising and graphic design companies, music schools and performing arts organizations.
Fine Arts majors are encouraged to participate in the annual Juried Student Art Show and visiting artist-in-residence program, and in student clubs like the Saint Anselm Art Society, the Anselmian Music Society, and the online cultural magazine, Lucubrations. Music emphasis students can participate in the Saint Anselm College Choir, the jazz band, or the woodwind ensemble. In addition to the numerous on-campus gallery exhibits, arts-related guest lectures and performances, Fine Arts classes make field trips to the many museums and performing arts centers in the Boston region.
