Browsing the Shelves in Geisel

If you aren't sure what topic you'd like to explore (or just enjoy browsing the shelves in the library) you can take a peek in these areas, where you will find books on the Renaissance:

DC33.3 Renaissance France (Main Level)
DC108-DC111 Renaissance France (Main Level)
DG445 Renaissance Italy (Upper Level)
DG533-DG537 Renaissance Italy (Upper Level)
DG737-DG738 Renaissance Florence (Upper Level)

Browsing the Online Catalog

Starting with the Library Home Page, you can look up the name of a historical person, either using keyword search or subject search.
If you use a subject search, you may need to invert the person's name. Example: Machiavelli, Niccolò.
Subject searches are more accurate than keyword, but can be difficult to formulate correctly.
Here are some actual subject headings used for books on the Renaissance:

  • Florence (Italy) – History
  • Florence (Italy) – History – 1421-1737
  • France - History – 16th Century
  • Italy – History – 1268-1492
  • Italy – History – 1492-1559
  • Renaissance – France
  • Renaissance – Italy

Use one source to lead you to another.
The library catalog lists all of the subject headings that have been assigned to each book.
The subject headings are hot-linked to every other book that also has that subject heading.
Clicking on a subject heading will lead you to more sources.
Also, use the bibliographies in the books that you find to help you find more.
If the library doesn't have the book, use Worldcat to locate a copy.  The Request ILL link on the book's Worldcat record will enable you to borrow a copy through Interlibrary Loan (takes 1-2 weeks).
