SciFinder-n: Search Tips

Search Tips

  • Use Advanced Search
  • Use natural language  (not Boolean to combine key terms)
  • Use prepositions (system uses them to parse concepts)
  • Avoid long, complex queries (can refine later once an answer set is up)
  • Wildcard symbols (* or ?) not needed due to auto-truncation
  • Synonym searching: SciFinder automatically looks for synonyms, but it might miss useful terms.  Include synonyms by putting them in parentheses.
    • E.g. lead poisoning in humans (men, women)
  • Practice "trial-and-error" when phrasing your statements
