Key Points from the Syllabus related to Library Research
Get children excited about reading
Model important reading strategies
Read chapter books with a range of: 1) cultural contexts and protagonists, 2) 2+ genres, 3) range of reading levels, grades 2-9
Read picture books to analyze: 1) artistic quality, 2) instructional purpose, and 3) sociocultural perspectives
Explore an author or theme in depth and apply the literary and aesthetic skills used in class
To be able to do these things, we need to:
Find picture books and chapter books
Identify genres, themes, and reading levels of the books
Evaluate books for artistic quality, instructional purpose and sociocultural perspectives. We can use Encyclopedias, book reviews, and literary criticism articles and books to do this.
