Book Group: Intro

Welcome to the Geisel Library Book Group

The Geisel Library Book Group is an informal book club welcoming all students, faculty, staff, and monastic members of Saint Anselm College. We provide copies of the books we read through our print, ebook and audiobook (Overdrive/Libby) collections and from the NH State Library and other participating libraries for our attendees to borrow. Then we meet in the Library Reading Room or over Zoom to discuss the popular fiction and non-fiction titles.

For more information, contact Melinda Malik, Assistant Library Director, Head of Reference & Instructional Services.

2025 is the Summer of Reading!

This summer, Geisel Librarians encourage you to enjoy the many benefits of reading:

  • improved vocabulary, writing, and communication skills
  • increased empathy, compassion, and understanding for others
  • better sleep, memory, cognition, and overall mental health, etc.

To supImage of a yellow sun wearing red sunglasses behind a stack of books, with the words "Summer Reading Challenge"port this activity we've prepared a "Summer Read" guide with lists of titles recently added to our collection. We also invite you to participate in our Summer Reading Challenge.

All SAC faculty, staff, students, and members of the monastic community are invited to participate. To play the game, print off the Summer Reading Challenge card. The challenge is played similar to Bingo whereby you "mark" a box for each challenge you complete as identified on the card.

Be sure to follow the instructions on the sheet and drop off your completed Summer Reading Challenge at the Geisel Circulation Desk by Noon on Friday, August 29, 2025 to be entered into a raffle for a $100 Barnes & Noble gift card. The winner will be announced by the end of the day.

Good luck with the challenge and happy reading!

Bag Lunch Book Group

Four weeks prior to the meeting date, copies of the books will be available at the Circulation Desk for you to borrow.

You're welcome to bring your lunch with you, and it's not required to have read the book to attend the book discussion.

We hope to see you there!

book cover, spotlight facing down toward a red target

"A masterpiece of rebellion and imprisonment where war is peace freedom is slavery and Big Brother is watching. Thought Police, Big Brother, Orwellian - these words have entered our vocabulary because of George Orwell's classic dystopian novel 1984.

The story of one man's Nightmare Odyssey as he pursues a forbidden love affair through a world ruled by warring states and a power structure that controls not only information but also individual thought and memory, 1984 is a prophetic haunting tale.

More relevant than ever before, 1984 exposes the worst crimes imaginable the destruction of truth freedom and individuality" (Goodreads.com).

"Set in a Native community in Maine, Night of the Living Rez is a riveting debut collection about what it means to be Penobscot in the twenty-first century and what it means to live, to survive, and to persevere after tragedy.

In twelve striking, luminescent stories, author Morgan Talty—with searing humor, abiding compassion, and deep insight—breathes life into tales of family and community bonds as they struggle with a painful past and an uncertain future.

In a collection that examines the consequences and merits of inheritance, Night of the Living Rez is an unforgettable portrayal of a Native community" (Goodreads.com).

Book cover with a picture of a monkey looking at a butterfly and text that reads "An Immense World"

"The Earth teems with sights and textures, sounds and vibrations, smells and tastes, electric and magnetic fields. But every animal is enclosed within its own unique sensory bubble, perceiving but a tiny sliver of an immense world. This book welcomes us into a previously unfathomable dimension--the world as it is truly perceived by other animals.

In An Immense World, author and acclaimed science journalist Ed Yong coaxes us beyond the confines of our own senses, allowing us to perceive the skeins of scent, waves of electromagnetism, and pulses of pressure that surround us. Because in order to understand our world we don't need to travel to other places; we need to see through other eyes" (Goodreads.com).
