Roper Center iPoll Database

Access iPoll

This database compiled by the Roper Center gathers survey questions and responses from all the major polling orgs.

Do keyword searching on words like "volunteer" or "write letter" to find the wording of past survey questions related to specific political or civic activities.

Scholarly Journal Articles

Search these research databases for scholarly journal articles about surveys of political and civic engagement.  Some will contain the survey instrument in an appendix, but all will characterize the questions that were asked by researchers.

One good search would be the following:

(engagement OR participation) AND (civic OR political) AND survey* AND (United States OR America*)

You can mix in keywords like volunteer*, involvement, or even "college" to focus on engagement by college students.

For best results, limit as follows:

  • Search (engagement OR participation) in the Title field
  • Limit the Source Type to Scholarly (Academic) Journals

Surveys of Engagement

These are some of the most historically important surveys with questions on political and civic engagement.  Use these websites to find survey questions and explore results.
