June 28, 1914: The Assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand

On this date, the heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire was assassinated by a 19-year old Serbian separatist, Gavrilo Princeps.  The assassination set off a chain reaction of threats and counter-threats between the Austrian Empire and its ally Germany, and the allies of Serbia (Russia, with its allies France and England), which culminated in the mobilization of the armies of the European powers, starting World War I.
