Introduction

This guide will introduce you to the best resources for doing research on the history of Native Americans, both in the library and online.

  • Start with the most general resources: reference books on Native Americans. Get ideas for topics, and check article bibliographies for more titles to help you in your research.
  • Next, look in the library catalog for books on your chosen topic. Again, check the bibliographies of the books you've found.
  • Now move to the most specific resources: journal articles. These will include the most current information on your topic. And they have bibliographies too!
  • Primary souces are invaluable for researching the perceptions and attitudes of the people you are researching. Use them to provide a firsthand perspective on Native American life, including records of their interactions with federal and local governments.

If you need in-depth assistance or have questions about any of the resources mentioned in the guide, please contact the Reference Desk.
